Or rather, a Bad Dentist?

Nowadays, most of the complex treatments we perform are retreatment, meaning redoing treatments that were not well executed the first time, and often not even the second or third time. On the other hand, we also frequently need to replace missing teeth with implants that were extracted when they were still treatable.

To explain why this is the reality, I will talk about what a Good Dentist needs to perform dental treatments with quality and durability:

1) Experience and Continuous Training – just as someone who has just got their driving license isn't as comfortable driving as someone who has been driving for 10 or 15 years, the same applies to Dentists. Besides clinical experience, essential for detecting and being able to resolve problems more quickly and effectively, it is fundamental that a specialised Dentist is in constant training, in order to keep up with the dizzying evolution in scientific knowledge, techniques, materials and equipment that is currently happening.

2) Materials and Equipment – there are many on the market, of good or bad quality, more expensive or cheaper, with proven results or not. Normally the patient doesn't realise at the time if the material used in their treatment is of better or worse quality, but there are indications that can lead to this conclusion. The most obvious is the cost of the treatment. If in one clinic the same treatment costs half as much as in another, there must be some difference, right? The equipment available is also very important, after all, no matter how good the cook is, you can't make omelettes without eggs...

3) Consultation time – the mouth is a very difficult place to work, believe me! Now imagine working in a complicated place, without all the ideal resources at your disposal, and on top of that having to work quickly, as the waiting room is full of people and the schedule is overbooked, according to the philosophy of this Clinic. As the popular saying goes: “Haste makes waste!”. 45 minutes between one consultation and another is the minimum time for a quality consultation.

4) Multidisciplinary Team The evolution of Dental Medicine has been such that nowadays it is practically impossible for a Dentist to be very good at carrying out all types of treatments. Sub-specialisation in different areas is a reality that is here to stay and benefits patients. Can a Dermatologist treat a heart condition? They might be able to, but it's not the same as being a responsible Cardiologist. The Dental Assistant also has a fundamental role here; it is currently unthinkable for a Dentist to work alone. That extra pair of hands represents indispensable assistance for efficient and long-lasting treatments.

5) Informed and demanding patients – people who understand that Oral health may have serious repercussions on your general health and therefore worry greatly about maintaining your teeth and gums in the best possible condition, individuals who know how their self-esteem is directly related to the aesthetics of their smile, patients who seek the most qualified professional who inspires them with the most confidence to undergo such intimate treatments, inspire The Good Dentist to go to the limit of their capabilities to restore the health, aesthetics, and function of their smile.

6) Insurance – Good dentists don't usually work with insurance. Why? Because where the Good Dentist sees a person as a whole, insurance companies see a number and a statistic… Insurance and dental health plans (yes, there are many products on the market that are sold as if they were dental insurance, which in fact they are not; they are merely discount cards) bring patient volume to clinics, at the expense of reduced prices and consultation times, but as I mentioned above, this inevitably has repercussions, as it is not possible to achieve the same quality when working faster and cheaper.

7) Clinic A good dentist either owns their own practice or works in one or more reference clinics for a prolonged period. They do not work for chain clinics. The business model of these chain clinics is typically characterised by a high turnover of inexperienced professionals (on lower remuneration). It is common for the dentist who starts a particular treatment not to finish it, as they may leave the clinic with little notice. These chains are also associated with intensive marketing and aggressive sales tactics, with promises of discounts and free consultations and treatments (which is illegal), as a way to attract clients to their clinics. Once there, clients are “locked in” through “Comprehensive Treatment Plans” in the form of financing that people end up paying off over a period of time. There are various cases, in Portugal and Spain, where these chain clinics have gone bankrupt and/or closed suddenly, leaving clients without completed treatments, but still having to service the financing they took on.

A afirmação que se segue pode ser um pouco controversa, mas sabia que o pior inimigo dos seus dentes pode não ser o açúcar mas sim o Dentista?
