Whether it's a fast-paced lifestyle that doesn't allow us the time, economic factors because we think it will be too expensive, or simply a fear of the possible procedures involved in treating our teeth, everything leads to us not consulting our dentist as regularly as we should and, consequently, not having our oral health checked to know if it's in optimal condition.

It is essential to visit the dentist at least twice a year so that we can check the condition of our teeth or detect any serious problems in time. However, it is still common that when we present a problem or discomfort in our teeth, gums, tongue or elsewhere in the mouth, we use home remedies that only provide temporary relief without addressing the root cause of the problem.

If we pay attention to numerous proven studies, oral health is directly linked to the proper functioning of our body. An example of this are the various kidney and heart diseases caused by dental problems.

In order to avoid complications, improve and maintain your good oral condition, we have prepared this list of five good reasons to visit your dentist:

Prevents periodontal disease.

By not visiting your dentist with the proper regularity, you are strongly contributing to the development of various diseases. One of the most frequent is periodontitis – or periodontal disease, formerly known as pyorrhoea. As it is a painless disease, it is often diagnosed too late and the damage caused is already quite severe.

The accumulation of bacteria is natural, to a greater or lesser extent. The problem lies in the fact that they solidify, giving rise to what we know as tartar. This, at first, causes mild gingivitis, leading the gums to bleed when you brush your teeth.

In certain cases, tartar builds up between the tooth and the gum. When this happens, a periodontal pocket forms, damaging the tooth, tissue, and bone, leading to the tooth itself falling out.

Only a deep clean can remove tartar. To do this, you need to visit your dentist, as they are responsible for removing all plaque and tartar that have built up between your teeth, gums, and other places inaccessible to your toothbrush.

2. Improve the aesthetics of smile.

The first impression you make on someone else comes from your face. We can also assure you that one of the most striking features is your smile. Without a doubt, it will be even more radiant if you have a mouth that looks harmonious, fresh, clean, and healthy.

Throughout your life, you find yourself in various social, professional, or personal settings where you end up talking to several people, expressing your ideas with appropriate emphasis, and smiling to convey the desired impression. The fact is, interpersonal relationships improve when we are not afraid to show ourselves as we are. On the other hand, insecurities – of psychological or physical origin – harm your self-esteem. This is one of the main reasons why aesthetics plays such an important role, especially in medicine.

Beyond maintaining good oral health, leading to teeth, gums, and tissues having a healthy and visually appealing appearance, deep professional cleanings ensure the proper functioning – and appearance – of the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. These specialised treatments and other technological procedures are (and should be) performed by a professional.

In short, visit your dentist regularly so that you can (continue to) smile without fear.

3. Avoid it Bad breath.

As you know, tobacco, alcohol, coffee, food, dryness and more are the main causes of bad breath due to bacterial build-up. In addition to brushing your teeth, flossing and tongue scraping are necessary to have fresh breath.

To prevent your bad breath from becoming halitosis, it is necessary to undergo a deep clean at your dentist. If, by chance, the cause of the bad breath is something else – such as gastric problems, oral cancer, sinusitis, kidney problems, bronchitis or others – only your dentist is able to diagnose its origin, and then refer you to the appropriate specialist.

If you already know the cause of your bad breath, your dentist can help to lessen the effects that the condition has had on your oral health.

4. Prevents functional problems.

Another strong reason to visit your dentist at least twice a year is the early detection of any potential dental problems you might be developing.

When there is a biological, anatomical, aesthetic or functional abnormality in the relationship between the teeth and the jaw, dento-maxillary changes may occur. Examples of this include: open bite; deep bite; missing or supernumerary teeth; crowded teeth; and prognathism (where the lower jaw protrudes beyond its normal position).

The diagnosis of these and other problems will always depend, in the first instance, on your dentist. Subsequently – and when necessary – it will become a multidisciplinary task so that you can achieve aesthetic harmony of the dental pieces.

5. Prevents oral cancer.

It is of great importance that you maintain your dental visits periodically. Your dentist is the only one capable of detecting certain problems and diagnosing them correctly and promptly to ensure early and immediate treatment. Especially in a case as sensitive as this, where the signs of pathology are difficult to identify.

Often, symptoms go unnoticed because they don't cause discomfort. Some of these signs, among others, are whitish spots, sores that don't heal, or even some difficulty swallowing. Oral cancer, as you know, can occur in the lips, salivary glands, tonsils, and throat.

Tobacco and alcohol consumption increase the risk of developing this type of cancer in direct proportion to the amount consumed. They are undoubtedly the main triggers of this disease, which, if not treated in time, can prove fatal.

Visit your dentist once more. These professionals are properly informed and trained to detect pre-cancerous lesions and take the necessary precautions and measures to eradicate this disease.

Although it's not always possible to have dental visits as part of our routine, there are certain measures we can take in this regard. Health insurance is an option, whether as an inclusive part or, in this case, merely focused on dentistry. The important thing is that you gain access to different basic medical specialities to take care of your health.

Routine check-ups are one of the most effective forms of prevention in any medicine and allow dentists and patients to detect pathologies and conditions that alter the proper functioning of the body and general good health.

Quer queiramos ou não, há sempre uma desculpa que nos faz protelar uma visita ao dentista.
