It is they that allow us to chew food so that it is easily digested and, consequently, nutrients are properly absorbed. This is just one of many examples that demonstrate the relevance of our teeth.

In the field of aesthetics, teeth also play a fundamental role: from defining the shape of our face to the appearance of our smile.

“You can't teach an old dog new tricks.” As such, it is from childhood that good oral health is taught. However, often – and for a variety of different reasons – we neglect good dental hygiene practices and end up reducing our regular visits to the dentist. As a result, teeth weaken and become susceptible to a variety of diseases and problems that can culminate in their loss.

It is, without a doubt, advisable to make an effort to take care of our oral health and, at the same time, stay informed about the problems we face. Below, we find a detailed list of seven major dental problems to which we may be susceptible:

1.- Bad breath.

We all know that bad breath can have various causes. One of the most frequent, clearly, is poor oral hygiene and not cleaning your teeth with the proper rigour and regularity. If this is the reason for the bad odour, your dentist can carry out a deep clean and, from then on, advise you on the appropriate brushing techniques so you can control the problem.

However, bad breath can stem from gastric, renal, pulmonary, or nasal problems. If this is the case, visiting your dentist is still recommended. They will be able to diagnose the origin and refer you to the appropriate specialist.

2.- Dental caries.

This is one of the most common causes of dental problems. It originates from a Poor oral hygiene accumulated over the years.

The bacteria found in our mouths can affect not only the enamel but also the tooth lining – dentine – which can lead to painful gaps that are sensitive to different temperatures.

If you don't know, cavities are the second most frequent problem in humans, only preceded by the common cold. Diet, consumption of alcoholic beverages, and cigarettes are exponential factors for the increase in risk of occurrence.

When considered too damaged, it is necessary to remove the tooth. However, if it can be saved, your dentist will use amalgam, root canal treatment or composite to repair it.

Brushing your teeth properly with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and cleaning your tongue and gums is the best prevention against cavities.

Wisdom teeth.

When we talk about the third molars located at the back of the mouth, we know that they often cause extremely painful episodes, accompanied by fever and other symptoms. The reason for this is that, sometimes, the so-called wisdom teeth, do not find space to develop and end up impacted, leading to the events described above.

Due to their difficult-to-access location and subsequent cleaning challenges, these are teeth more prone to decay. Even when they don't cause discomfort, dentists recommend their extraction to prevent future problems.

4.- Bruxism.

This is another common cause of dental problems and something more difficult to detect. Bruxism is characterised by constant and intermittent teeth grinding, mostly during sleep, resulting from stress or other factors.

The major consequence is high wear on the teeth, making them more vulnerable to decay and other potential dental problems.

Regular visits to your dentist are key to diagnosing and treating this problem. A significant part of the therapy involves – but not exclusively – the use of splints (plastic or resin devices) to alter your bite, relax your muscles, and prevent friction that causes wear.

5.- Sensitive teeth.

Among other things, decay, excessive or too vigorous brushing, and teeth-whitening chemicals are the main causes of sensitive teeth.

When dentine is corroded, it affects the tiny tubules that connect directly to the tooth root, leading to tooth sensitivity. Its exposure can cause pain when eating or drinking something hot, cold, acidic, very sweet or very salty. In some more extreme cases, cold air itself can cause pain.

Both gentle, thorough brushing and fluoride treatments applied by your dentist can alleviate tooth sensitivity.

6.- Yellow teeth.

There's no doubt that tooth stains or discolouration are caused by multiple factors, such as: age; poor oral hygiene; tobacco; coffee; certain intensely coloured and acidic fruits or vegetables; and others.

One of the most susceptible elements to damage is, clearly, tooth enamel. To care for it, periodic check-ups and a thorough cleaning by your dentist are necessary, in addition to whitening sessions. This will also improve the appearance and aesthetics of your smile.

7.- Gingivitis.

When brushing is poor – which fails to completely eliminate the build-up of bacteria on teeth – tartar appears. This accumulates between the gums and teeth and causes an infection in the tissues called gingivitis.

The main symptoms of gingivitis are redness, bad breath, inflammation and bleeding gums, among others. The frequency of your dental visits will determine the early detection of this problem, which can eliminate accumulated tartar through deep cleaning. If not properly and promptly treated, gingivitis can cause total tooth loss.

Keeping in mind that you should take care of your oral health, use appropriate brushing techniques, use toothpastes whose main ingredient is fluoride, and use dental floss accompanied by occasional scraping of your tongue and cheeks puts you on the right track to avoid bothersome dental problems.

It is also important to highlight the significance of visiting your dentist regularly, every four to six months, and never disregarding any minor discomforts you experience, as these could be caused by dental problems. If diagnosed promptly, these will contribute to your oral health, which is, in essence, an integral part of your overall well-being.

Para evitarmos problemas dentários, é sem dúvida alguma necessário fazermos um esforço para cuidarmos da saúde da nossa boca!
